Jeff Bezos, one of the world's richest persons, recently pledged $120 million to a non-profit organization, whose name was not disclosed.
A source at Forbes obtained the details of the donation from Securities and Exchange Filings, according to which Bezos transferred a total 47,727 shares of his company Amazon to a non-disclosed not for profit organization. The total worth of these shares is close to $118 million dollars.
Bezos has been particularly generous with numerous contributions and donations this year. Since the beginning of the year 2022, he has donated 84,030 shares of Amazon, which were approximately worth $233 million. According to the sources at Forbes, Bezos has preferred donating to nonprofits organizations through Amazon shares, so that the philanthropic organizations don’t have to pay taxes.
Jeff Bezos has no obligation to The Securities and Exchange Filings to disclose the name of the organization where he donates his shares to, but he has made it a habit to announce the nonprofit's name whenever he makes a sizable donation.
Previously, he has donated millions to various non-profits, such as the Barack Obama Foundation, to whom he donated $100 million last November. He also donated another $100 million between a number of different non-profit organizations aimed at helping the homeless, during the same month.
There have been speculations about Bezos’s recent significant contribution. Some have said that the donation was made to an organization working towards environment protection, as a part of his recent Bezos Earth Fund initiative. He has also pledged a donation of $10 billion as part of this initiative to help the fight against climate change and global warming. The Bezos Earth Fund was founded two years ago, and according to the details disclosed, the fund has donated a total $1.4 billion to the cause.
In an Instagram pledging the $10 billion donation, Bezos said that he wishes to work alongside those who have made it their mission to fight the damaging impact of climate change on the planet Earth. He wishes to explore new ways to join this fight against climate change.
With this donation, Bezos aimed to fund activists, NGOs and scientists working to help find solutions at preserving the environment and protecting nature. The $10 billion donation represented even less than 8% of Bezos’s net worth, which is equal to $150 billion at this time.
